My New Do

I mentioned last week in my Five on Friday post that I was excited to have my aunt cut and color my hair!  And let me tell you, she did not disappoint!  Sadly, the weather did not want to play nicely on Sunday and I couldn't get any 'good' photos taken.  Alas, you'll have to check out the ch-ch-changes via my trusty iPhone!

Here's the before, don't mind my ginormous forehead.  I swear it's the photo angle.

If you follow me on Instagram, I posted a mid-process photo where I'm all foiled up and Aunt Stacy is working her magic...

And what's a new do without an After posted to Instagram?

Sunday morning we went out to brunch with some friends and busted out my new CONAIR Infinit Pro curling tool to refresh the curls from the day before.  I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to use!  My hair, each individual strand is thin, but there is a LOT of it and curling my hair is always quite the process.  I was able to curl all my hair in under 40 minutes!  For me, this is awesomesauce!  The only products I used prior to and after curling were CHI Iron Guard and some hairspray.  And the best part?!?  The curls actually lasted ALL DAY!  I curled my hair in the morning and by 3:30pm it still looked like this...

I'm loving the ombre and it'll be perfect for this Spring and Summer!!

Book Review: A Dog's Purpose

Calling all dog lovers!!  If you haven't had the chance to read A Dog's Purpose yet, you absolutely need to add it to your list!

7723542

This delightful book is told from one dog's perspective as his soul is reborn and lives four different lifetimes.  We are first introduced to a stray mutt, a Golden Retriever who loves his boy and learns what it means to be a 'good dog', then a German Shepard and finally a Black Labrador.  Each time his soul is reborn he is able to apply lessons from his previous life to his current situation, all while striving to find purpose in his existence.

A Dog's Purpose was a quick read that made me smile at the dog-eye view of the world and laugh at, among other things, what they may be thinking when we use our sing-songy voice to tell them to go do their business in the yard!  Most of all, I spent the weekend really watching Bella to see if I could tell what she might be thinking about her life with us!

And wondering, how much did she really love or loathe when I dressed her in that tutu?!?!  I mean she looks happy, but what was really going on in her head?  I know that Matt thought I was absolutely ridiculous...

Want to join in on the fun?
Next month we are reading Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.

Five on Friday v.12

Happy Friday!!  I hope this week treated you well and want to wish you a very happy weekend!

 ONE:
Today I'm headed to Fair Oaks Farm in Fair Oaks, Indiana to hangout with adorable Holstein calves and cute little piggies!   Fair Oaks is agri-tourism at it's finest and they're 'committed to educating the public about modern farming efforts, but also to protecting the environment, caring for our animals and ensuring the highest quality products possible.'  And just yesterday they were listed in an article from the Huffington Post as the number one place to visit in Indiana this summer!

Source

TWO:
Every month my mom, three of her brothers (and their families) and three of her cousins all get together for Family Game Night.  Matt and I have only been able to attended a few because we live the farthest away, but we're going to this one and I'm really excited!  They all love playing euchre, but you have to watch them because they're a bunch of card sharks.

THREE:
Not only is Saturday FGN, but my Aunt Stacy is going to cut, color and style my hair!  Last June I donated around 14 inches of hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths at our community Relay for Life event and I'm ready for a change.  The length won't change too drastically, but we're definitely going to change up the style and color!  Ombre' here I come!

FOUR:
In yesterday's Ag Chat, I talked about The Next Crop Project and before heading up for FGN I'll be test driving a Ram truck to do my part to help the National FFA Organization!
You should do the same!

FIVE:
Certainly I'm not the only one who stockpiles candy after Easter?  At the grocery store this week I picked up a bag of dark chocolate Cadbury Mini Eggs and Hersey's Kisses for ONE DOLLA a bag!  The Kisses went straight to the freezer, the mini eggs are stashed in my desk at work for emergencies...

Cheers to the freakin' weekend!

Ag Chat: The Next Crop Project

How many of you are familiar with the Ram truck/Paul Harvey "So God mad a farmer..." commercial that debuted at the 2012 Super Bowl?  If by chance you haven't seen it take a moment and watch the clip below.

This video brings me to tears each time I watch it!  The words coupled with the images used, it really is a wonderful tribute to the American farmer!

Ram has now taken their dedication to farmers one step further and are partnering with the National FFA Organization to help impact young people who will be the next generation of farmers or want to pursue a career in agriculture.  On Saturday, April 25 at participating dealerships you can test drive a Ram truck and a $20 donation will be made to the FFA in support of local chapters!

As a product of FFA, as well as 4-H, I'm very passionate about the amazing things that this organization does for young people.  And it's so much more than teaching them how to be farmers!  Looking back, I know now that FFA taught me leadership skills, instilled a sense of confidence that wasn't there before and positively impacted my character, all while I was having fun competing at contests and meeting new people with the same interests!

Check out the Ram website to find the nearest participating dealership to you and take some time out of your Saturday to test drive a truck for this great cause!!

20 Songs I Can't Help But Crank Up

I know that I can't be the only gal who craves the days where you can slip on your sunglasses, open the sunroof, roll down the windows and crank up the tunes on the radio!!  Last Friday was one of those afternoons for me.  I couldn't bare to be cooped up at work any longer and was counting the minutes until I could bug out and feel the warm wind hitting my face as I belted out some of my favorite songs!

This got me to thinking about the songs that I absolutely LOVE to sing (although not well) along with.  There's definitely an underlying theme to the songs listed, I was raised on country and it's still my favorite, but there are few randoms thrown in for good measure!

I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool by Barbara Mandrell
As a young girl who struggled to fit in, I was certain this song was written for me!

She's In Love With The Boy by Trisha Yearwood
This was one of the first cassette tapes I ever had and would put in in my red My First Sony Walkman and listen to it over and over and over again until the batteries died.

17 by Cross Canadian Ragweed
"You'll always be seventeen in your hometown."  So true.

Livin' On  A Prayer by Bon Jovi
Who doesn't love to crank this one up and sing along?

When God Fearin' Women Get The Blues by Martina McBride
Even now, one of my old college roommates and I still text each other when we hear this song on the radio!  It was one of our favorites back in the day and we can repeat it word for word with or without the music.

40 Hour Week by Ala-freakin-bama
For me, bands like Alabama and songs like this truly speak to working class Americans who get up everyday, work hard and don't expect a lot in return.

Fancy by Reba McEntire
I was singing this song as a kid in our family car long before I even understood it was about a girl who grew up to be hooker!  It's also a classic karaoke song for my girlfriends and I.

We're Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister
Not only is this great to jam out in the car to, but it's one of my favorites to run to.  I may throw a couple fist pumps in as I'm pounding the pavement.

Rodeo by Garth Brooks
Growing up attending and competing in rodeos makes it an easy choice!

Airstream Song by Miranda Lambert
This song, which never got much radio play, is probably one of my all time favorites that she sings!  And if I could pick one celebrity BFF, it would be Miranda.  I'm certain we'd be besties!

Party In The USA by Miley Cyrus
Don't hate.  It's a fun song!

Dixieland Delight by Ala-freakin-bama
I pretty much love anything that Alabama sings, but this song brings back memories of many nights in the AGR house swing dancing and singing at the top of our lungs!

Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger
Classic, right?!? Right?  I'm not sure we can be friends if you think otherwise.

Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne
There's not much alternative/punk music on my list, but I really like this song!

Delta Dawn by Tanya Tucker
I just can't restrain myself... "Deeellltttaaa Dawn what's that flower you have on..."

Harvest Time by Luke Bryan
This is another obscure song from a really popular (or you could insert hot, attractive, unavailable, etc.) country singer!  It really shouldn't come as a surprise that songs about small towns and farming are some of my favorite!

That Girl Is A Cowboy by Garth Brooks
"Man she's something when she's one of the boys, but something else anytime she's not."  It would be such a compliment to have someone say this about me!

Don't Stop Believin' by Journey
In college there was this epic 80's tribute band called Hairbangers Ball that would play several of the local bars and the whole place would go crazy when they played "Don't Stop Believin'"!

Love Can Build A Bridge by The Judds
I love me some classic, belt it out ballads!

Famous In A Small Town by Miranda Lambert
I'm just don't think it's possible to really understand small town life unless you've lived it.  There's really nothing like going to school and having teachers who also taught your parents.  Or riding around town on the back of a firetruck after winning the big game.  And there was also the speed at which the news/gossip spread from the gas station to the corn elevator to the coffee shop.

Five on Friday v.11

Happy Friday to each of you lovelies!!  Let's jump right into today's 5 on Friday link up with April, Christina, Darci and Natasha, shall we?!?

THE GOOD LIFE BLOG

ONE:
I'm so looking forward to driving home to see my parents and celebrate Easter with them in the church that I was baptized, confirmed and married in!  And I'm well prepared and won't be caught off guard when Pastor Joel says "He is Risen!" to our congregation..."He is Risen Indeed!"

TWO:
Confession: I have F O U R slow cookers.  Yes, four.  I have one mini, one standard, one that has three separate sized crocks and one programmable 6.5 quart.  And I don't just use them in the Fall and Winter either!!  Mine get just as much use in the Spring and Summer because it allows us to have supper ready to go when the weather is nice and we'd rather be outside enjoying it!  This week I made Slow Cooker Chicken Chile Verde and it was bangin'!!  Do yourself a favor and make her homemade tomatillo salsa verde, don't just buy a jar, it's that good!

Source

THREE:
I have a bread starter in my refrigerator that I've kept alive for over two years.  Since cutting out most of the grain in my diet I don't do much more than feed it any more though. Once or twice a month I'll make a batch of cinnamon rolls, leave a few for Matt and then give the rest away.  While perusing Pinterest I did find this recipe and may let myself have just one...

FOUR:
Five of my good friends and I booked a cabin in southern Illinois for a girls weekend this summer.  Coincidentally, it's the weekend before my birthday!  Friends+Wine+Tasty Treats=One Happy Gal

FIVE:
What's your favorite Easter candy?  I eluded to mine in my post about what I hoped would be in my Easter Basket.  Reese's Eggs and Cadbury Mini Eggs!  I don't do the Cadbury Creme Eggs, but it's a good thing for my waistline that those Mini Eggs only come out once a year!!!

I hope each of you have a wonderful weekend that's full of sunshine, family, some candy and a little wine to keep you sane!  Happy Easter!

Easter Basket Wishes

This Sunday I will be headed home to my parents with Bella to celebrate Easter.  Our plans include church and then a nice dinner.  Mom is making ham and baked sweet potatoes and I'm contributing our home canned green beans, a lettuce salad with all the fixin's and I'll probably make something for dessert as well!  Matt has turkey tags for this weekend and will head down to southern Illinois Friday afternoon.  Fingers-crossed he shoots something Saturday and will make it to my parents in time for the festivities on Sunday morning!

And just in case anyone (cough cough... my husband or my mom) wanted to know here are a few things that I'd love to see the Easter Bunny deliver to the farm while we're at church Sunday morning!   On second thought, I might need something bigger than a basket...

Shirt, Nail Polish, Earrings, Lipstick, Watch, Tumbler, Spiral Slicer

What are you hopping, er... hoping will be in your Easter basket?

Snubbing The Snow

Last night we got snow.

Again.

Will the most cold and longest winter of my life ever end?!?!  GAH.

So despite the snow that's threatening to dishearten all Midwesterners, not to mention kill my strawberries and rhubarb plants, I'm posting pictures of my Spring and Easter decor!

Take that Mother Nature!  We're all getting really sick of your attitude...

What Would Your Superpower Be?

A while back, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were on Ellen doing a promo for their new movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.  There's no doubt in my mind that there are tons of you out there who love Emma as much as me! What clinched it for you?  House Bunny?  Easy A?  The Help?  Crazy, Stupid, Love. with hottie Ryan Gosling?  For me it was Easy A, but The Help solidified her on my list of favorite actresses!!

Source

As I was watching, I got to thinking 'What would my superpower be?' Hmm.

Flying?  Useful, yes.

Invisibility?  Oh the possibilities.

Mind control?  Gracious.

Time Travel?  Intriguing.

Teleportation?  Ding, ding, ding.  We have a winner!!  I mean seriously, how cool would it be that in one instant you could be somewhere else entirely?!?  I would obviously use it to travel the world!  Wanna see the sights of Santorini, Greece?  BAM!  Head back for a quick trip to Disneyland?  BOOM!  The Grand Canyon? BADA BING!

What about you?  If you could choose a superpower to wake up one morning with what would it be?

Five on Friday v.10

So I'm rehashing a few of my five from last week's Five on Friday because I'm still curious what you gals have to input about some of the products and questions I have for ya!

ONE:
I put this post out a week or so ago, but there isn't be any harm asking today either...
Does anyone have any thoughts or glowing reviews on either of these products?  I struggle with getting curls to really 'stay' and I'm rather uncoordinated with a traditional curling iron, so I thought this new iron may be what I'm looking for?  If any of you glamorous gals out there have experience with either of these new fangled contraptions please, please let me know!!

TWO:
Having recently purchased Naked2, my Pinterest board is filled with tutorials on creating beautiful looks using the palette.  I haven't used it much, mostly because I feel like my day should be worthy of the pretty colors!  Please share with me any tutorials or suggestions you have for utilizing Naked2!!

THREE:
It's supposed to be a glorious weekend here!  They're talking about temps in the 70s.  Wahoo!  I've got plans to do some more yard work and getting to the barn to ride Louie.  Our first horse show is scheduled for May 10, and he's a long way from looking as good as he did in this picture!!

FOUR:
You may remember that I went to Disneyland a few weeks ago, well my flight kept getting delay leaving Indy.  And not just by a few minutes either!  Hours.  So I decided to treat myself to a gel manicure to help pass the time and I loved them!  Living where I do, going to a salon and having them done regularly is really not a reality so I've been looking for an at home kit.  Last week on my lunch hour I found the SensatioNail french manicure starter kit marked down 25%!  Winning!  Has anyone tried this brand?  Got any tips or tricks?

FIVE:
I have a confession to make... I started the book 12 Years a Slave at the end of February and have read the first few chapters, but I just can't seem to get into it!  I quit reading it to focus on my March book club book and haven't went back since.  Honestly, I  couldn't tell you much about those first three chapters either.  I need to go back and start from the beginning!  Has anyone else read it?  Did you have this issue too?

Ag Chat: They Convert Cow Poop To What?

Hey y'all!  Quick tidbit.  Today's entry marks my 100th post on The Purple Front Door and I'm excited to have it be about something that's dear to me, educating people about agriculture!  This post also serves as an introduction to those visiting from The Ultimate Blog Party 2014.  Take a look around and I hope you like what you see!

Did you know that the state of Wisconsin has more than 1.27 million dairy cows living there?

That's a lot, huh?

All those cows have to go number two, right?  I know you're thinking "where is she going with this one?!", but hang tight I'll tie it all up in just a sec.  There are many electrical cooperatives in Wisconsin and throughout the US that are turning cow poop in electricity to power homes and businesses!  They've even dubbed it 'cow power'!

Source

So are you asking yourself, 'so how does this actually work?'  Here's the details.  Farmers use a machine called a manure digester to turn methane gas released from cow poop into electricity.  Before the poop goes into the digester it is heated to 100° F which helps to activate the microorganisms that are inside.  As the manure breaks down it creates a gas, as well as both liquids and solids.  The gas is mostly made of methane which is then collected and used to generate electricity!  The byproduct of creating methane isn't wasted either!  The liquids and solids are used as fertilizer, cow bedding and even in the lawn care industry.

Source

Okay, spill!  Did you know that cow poop is converted to electricity or is this news to you?!?

Homemade Apple Pie Larabar

I tasted my first Larabar years ago and thought they were delicious!  Mostly because of the price tag, I never really became a slave to the tasty little snack bar though.  When I first started following the Paleo lifestyle I noticed that several Paleo food bloggers had recipes to create their own... now we're talking!  Save money and get crafty in the kitchen?  Sign me up.

For a while, I was content just making the recipes that I had found on Pinterest.  Then one day Matt came home with a bag of dehydrated apples and I thought I could create an apple pie version of my own!  After a few trial runs, I'm finally satisfied with the final product!

To make these bars you'll need to gather almonds, walnuts, dates, raisins, dried apples, cinnamon, ginger and coconut oil.  I make these in the middle sized Ninja Master Prep Pro bowl, but any food processor should do the trick!

The first step to making these bars is to combine the raisins and dates into the food processor and puree them until they have broken down.  Once you think they've broken down enough, go a couple extra seconds!  This mixture should look like this...

Go ahead and add the apples at this point and break them up a bit too!

Add the almonds and walnuts to the container with the pureed fruit.  Now you'll want to sprinkle in the spices and give it a whirl to combine everything all together!  You'll want to scrape the sides of the food processor as needed.  At this point I stop the blender and melt some coconut oil in the microwave.  To get the ingredients to really come together I have the best luck drizzling the oil in as I have the blender running.  Once you're satisfied, you'll line an 8x8 pan with wax paper and empty the contents into the pan.

Then use your hands and press into the pan, creating a uniform thickness.

Stick the pan in the refrigerator and let the bars cool!  And now you wait.  After a few hours, I generally let them sit undisturbed for about two hours.  Once the bars have had a chance to cool, you can cut them into squares or rectangles.  I generally cut the large square into eighths, but you could do smaller or larger!  Tip: cut in the bars in the pan, rather than lifting the large square out first.  This makes them easier to cut!  I wrap each individual bar in plastic wrap and then store them in a resealable bag in the refrigerator until I'm ready for a snack.

And now I'm officially hungry!

So I make my own Larabars, do you make anything at home because you refuse to buy it at the store?  Let me know, I'm always up for trying something new!

Homemade Apple Pie Larabar
Yields: 8 bars

Ingredients:
1 cup dates, pitted
3 Tablespoons raisins
1 cup dehydrated apples
3/4 cup almonds, unsalted
3/4 cup walnuts
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger
coconut oil

Directions:
Combine dates and raisins in food processor.  Puree until the dried fruits have broken down.

Add dehydrated apples to the processor and pulse until all three fruits have combined.  You may need to use a spoon to scrape the sides of the bowl to help incorporate the fruits together.

Now put the almonds, walnuts, and spices into the bowl of the food processor and blend until the nuts have broken down and combined with the fruits.  Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed.

Melt some coconut oil in the microwave and then drizzle the oil into the bowl with the motor running.  Once all the ingredients have been blended together pour the contents into a wax paper lined 8 x 8 pan and press into a flat, uniform thickness bar.

Cool in refrigerator for at least 2 hours.  Once cool, cut into eight bars and wrap individually in plastic wrap.

Store in refrigerator in a resealable bag.

Ten Favorite Things v.3

It's time for this month's Ten Favorite Things link up with Brianna over at Endlessly Beloved.  The topic for April is blogging.  As a new blogger, I was afraid I'd struggle to come up with enough items, but I'm pretty happy with my list!

Ten Favorite Things About: Blogging
one: connections
Getting to know people from all over that I have a genuine connection with is pretty freaking awesome!  So far I've connected with other agriculturists, Labrador lovers and one girl who went to the same college as me... Hi Megan!

two: memories
Blogging gives me the opportunity to put some great memories out there that one day I can look back on and smile at.

three: thoughts and opinions
I can get out my thoughts and ask for yours on all different sorts of things.  I also find it very valuable avenue to get restaurant suggestions and cities to visit!

four: freedom of speech
So maybe it's not really speech, rather type but it's my place to post what I choose.  Certain posts will reflect that I'm a proud farmer's daughter and agriculturist, but the next day it could be about seeing the world differently than Matt or even a request for hair and beauty advice.

five: showcase talents
I love reading tutorials on blog posts!  The craftier the better.  Blogging gives us a place to show off hidden and not so hidden talents without coming across as a narcissist!

six: product reviews
Not living in town or close to one for that matter, I don't have the opportunity to buy all the latest and greatest trends that hit the beauty scene.  But from reading the reviews that y'all post I know which ones I'll definitely be picking up to try the next time around.

seven: championing others
This goes along with making connections through blogging, but it provides you with your own  personal cheerleaders!  Everyone lifts you up when you're down and cheers you along as you succeed.

eight: reading other blogs
I was a blog reader long before I was a blog writer.  I still enjoy reading other people's stuff now that I'm blogging regularly.  It's sorta like a pen pal throwback, I dig it!

nine: the recipes
There are some AMAZING food bloggers out there that literally have me drooling over my keyboard with just their photos!

ten: learning something new
Whether I'm the one learning or I'm educating someone, blogging provides a platform to educate.

So what do you enjoy about this bloggy world?

Five on Friday v.9

Another week has come and gone!  Phew.  After taking off and heading South last weekend, I'm looking forward to getting a few things done around the house that I've been putting off.  That list includes, but sadly isn't limited to, cutting all of the fountain grasses in my landscaping back, continuing to plug away at the Spring Cleaning check list that I found via Pinterest, and pilfer clothes and such that I don't LOVE anymore!  It's a daunting task, but I know I'll feel better after getting it all done.

Today's 5 on Friday is a mish-mash of thoughts, purchases and questions I have for you!  Check it out and let me know what you have to say!

ONE:
I put this out there earlier this week, but there isn't be any harm asking today either...

THREE:
How freaking amazing did Christina's Mini Egg Nest Brownies look?!?!  I'm sucha sucker for the Cadbury Mini Eggs!  When I mention them around Matt I have to clarify that I'm talking about the mini ones, not the creme filled.  It's probably a good thing for my waistline that they only come out once a year!  Not gonna lie, I bought a big bag and have them stored in the freezer in the garage out of eyesight for safe keeping!

This week on my lunch hour I found the SensatioNail french manicure starter kit marked down 25%!  Winning!

Oh Boy

This graphic cracks me up!  I know that when I'm speaking to other women I can describe the color yellow by saying 'butter' or 'lemon', but to Matt that's just yellow.  I've learned the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) method is by far the best way to go about talking about colors to most men!  This morning at home was no different, but it still didn't go my way.  Let me set the scene...

I was in the kitchen eating my breakfast and Matt was getting ready to leave for work.  He went to grab his coat out of the closet so he could head out.

Myla: "Would you grab my blue jacket while you're in there?"

Matt: "Sure."
Myla: "Thank you."  Hears the closet door open.
Matt: "You mean the purple one?"
Myla: "Um, no.  The blue one."
Matt: "I don't see a blue one.  There's a purple one."
Myla: Heavy sigh.  "Okay, it could be hanging on the back of my door at work?  Wait, does this purple coat have a stand-up collar and a flower pin?"
Matt: "Yes."
Myla:  Rolls eyes and shakes head.  "That's the one I want..."

On the upside he did come out with a coat for me to wear because there's been instances when he forgets the one thing I ask for.  So I should chalk up it as a win.

Surely this has happened to other women, right?!?  I can't be the only one.
