The Halloween Costume That Almost Wasn't #blogtober14

Living in a small, rural community poses certain challenges, but there are definite perks!!

Just this morning, I called the Post Office well before they were actually open (like HOURS before!) on the off chance someone would answer and tell me the box that contained our Halloween costumes showed up after our mail was delivered Thursday morning.

Thank goodness, the postmistress answered the phone and the package was there!  WooHoo!!!

Since the movie A League of Their Own came out in 1992, it's been one of my favorites!  You've seen it right?

Rockford Peaches costume

The movie is based on the women who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which existed from 1943 to 1954.  While the movie took some liberties with the story, all four of the teams featured (Rockford, Racine, Kenosha and South Bend) actually existed along with 11 other teams throughout Midwest.

Rockford Peaches, 1945
When I say this is one of my favorite movies, I mean my sister and I literally wore out our VHS copy!  Which means when it comes on TV, I'm the obnoxious one who sits there and recites every. single. line.
Rockford Peaches
Matt was up at o'dark thirty to go hunting, so selfies at work was the best I could do this morning!

I totally get that it's annoying, but I can't help myself!  And there are so many classic lines in this movie!  Here are five of my favorites...

Jimmy Dugan: Are you crying? Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying! THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!
Doris Murphy: Why don't you give her a break, Jimmy...
Jimmy Dugan: Oh, you zip it, Doris! Rogers Hornsby was my manager, and he called me a talking pile of pigshit. And that was when my parents drove all the way down from Michigan to see me play the game. And did I cry?
Evelyn Gardner: No, no, no.
Jimmy Dugan: Yeah! NO. And do you know why?
Evelyn Gardner: No...
Jimmy Dugan: Because there's no crying in baseball. THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL! No crying!
 ----------------
Dottie Hinson: Lay off the high ones!
Kit Keller: I like the high ones!
Dottie Hinson: Mule!
Kit Keller: Nag!
 ----------------
Mae Mordabito: Evelyn. Evelyn. I'm sorry but I have to kill your son.
(begins to chase Stillwell with a bat)
Doris Murphy: Mae! Mae! Don't use my bat! Use Marla's. It's heavier.
 ----------------
Mae Mordabito: (at Tryouts) Ya know they got over a hundred girls here. So some of yous are going home.
Kit Keller: What do you mean some of us?
(Doris throws a fast ball at Kit, which Dottie catches with her bare hands)
Mae Mordabito: OK, some of them are going home.
Doris Murphy: Hey, how'd you do that?
 ----------------
Kit Keller: (Talking about the uniform) It's awfully short!
Dottie Hinson: Short?!?  I'm gonna have to squat in that!

Did you dress up for Halloween today?  Any party plans for the weekend?

Facts About Me #blogtober14

Hmm, what's a blog without sharing some personal details about yourself, right?

Isn't what keeps you coming back post after post is that you relate to someone you've never meet through cooking or maybe a mutual connection (for me this is farming, the Midwest, agriculture or horses)?

Any time I write a post that describes me I'll tag it 'farmer's daughter' which doesn't exactly tell you everything you need to know about me, but I hope it gives you a good idea!  I want it to convey that I'm intensely proud of my farm background.  And also that I'm a daddy's girl!

But there's more...

I'm a crafter, but I'm quite terrible at posting tutorials online here.  I get wrapped up in the making and forget to stop along the way to take pictures.  For instance, I had the best of intentions post a step-by-step how to for my FALL lalalala sign that's decorating my porch.  These are the pics I have on my phone:

Step 1: Stain your unfinished wood.
Step... Well, damn that didn't go as planned!
Purple is my favorite color.  Shocking, right?

For me, it's a toss-up between a good margarita (i.e. lots of tequila) and a glass of wine (read... not sweet).

I once accidentally flushed a pair of sunglasses. Then there was the time I broke my orthodontic retainer by slamming it in the car door...

More often than I'd like to admit, I accidentally put my underroos on inside out and don't realize it until much later in the day.

I really want another dog.  Matt isn't convinced.  I'd prefer a corgi, aussie or another lab, but I'm also open to any Heinz 57 variety that I may come across at a shelter!

I love the character dynamic on Criminal Minds, but the show's content usually has me hiding under a blanket with my hands over my ears!

Any party where I can wear a costume is a good party in my book!

I hate bugs that jump.

One of the greatest summers of my life was spent at the Victory Junction Gang Camp in North Carolina, where I was a counselor in the horse barn.  VJGC is designed to let kids with chronic and terminal illnesses just be 'regular kids' even if it's just for one week during the summer.

Foolishness #blogtober14

I have a pretty high tolerance for which I can embarrass myself for the sake of a good laugh!  For whatever reason... Matt is most embarrassed by my shenanigans!

This face always get's a head shake and eye roll from Matt.  You can feel sorry for him, it's cool!

Someone is not impressed with their hat.  And it's not me!
I'll do just about anything to embarrass Maggie.  Even steal kisses.
I mean it's a Dale Earnhardt car.  It's a given.
Another classic.  Just look at poor Matt!  Ha!
Surely, I'm not the only spouse who does ornery things just to poke the one they love?

Superstitions #blogtober14

I'm not superstitious in the "step on a crack, break your mother's back" sorta way, but there are a few things that I have a very specific routine for!  One routine that sticks out in my head is definitely the motions I go through prior to and the day of a horse show.

First things, first.  We ride.  Louie tends to get a little keyed up so getting in a good workout beforehand is a must!  Next comes clipping his hair and bath time.  Ya'll have seen Louie... there's a lot of white to clean!  Following his bath, I brush out his tail and band his mane.  Then he gets covered in all his purple clothes to keep him clean overnight!

Here's where I say a prayer (hoping he'll stay clean) and turn him back out in the pasture with his buddies.  This is dependent on the weather to an extent though.  If it's been super rainy and muddy, he has to stay in!  Otherwise, for his sanity and mine, he goes back out.

The morning of the show, I'm up before dawn.  I get myself all made up and ready and then head to the barn to bring Louie in and feed him breakfast.  If the show starts at 9am, we are generally there by 7:30am.  Why so early?  More routines have to be followed!

The first thing that happens is Louie is unloaded and I take him to the arena were we will be showing.  We walk around the pen, once both directions, so he can see everything and if there's something spooky or scary he can get over it then and not have an issue in the middle of the class!  Then he get's lunged, which means he walks, trots and canters on the end of a really long rope.  Lunging helps get the kinks or bunks out if he's feeling really good!  After I'm satisfied he's tired, but not too tired, we head back to the trailer and start the process of beautification!

Clean off any 'green' spots... manure.  Brush out his tail.  Whiten legs.  Black hooves.  Put in his fake tail.  Yes, he wears a weave!  Shave any hairs on his nose I may have missed with the clippers.  Spray with Pepi to make his coat shine.  Then I get myself dressed!

After I'm dressed, we practice our showmanship pattern.  But I've learned that if I practice with him too much he gets burned out and he's a dud in the actual class!  It's a fine line.  It's only taken me three years to get in the groove...

Are you superstitious about anything or do you have a specific routine you follow?

Fall Beauty Swap

Happy Monday!!

Is that too much enthusiasm for a Monday??  I mean the sun is shining and we're supposed to top out somewhere near 80 degrees today so it should be a great day!

If that's not enough, I get to share with y'all my Beauty Swap goodies I received from my new pal Whitney and let me tell you she spoiled me rotten.  Take a look and see for yourself!

Coming all the way from...

Greeting Card

Whitney sent me some super cute Halloween goodies!  Aren't those eyelashes the bomb.com?!?  My costume doesn't really warrant them, but I may just have to wear them just because!  And the press-on nails have such cute designs.  I'm thinking of mixing and matching!

Halloween

And because we both aren't pregnant and also to ward off any threat of Ebola...
Has anyone tried the Deep Eddy cranberry vodka?  I'm thinking Sprite or 7UP as a good mixer?!

Prevention Kit

Now for the make-up goods!!  I'm telling you, Whitney out-frickin-did herself with this box of awesomeness!

Beauty Swap Goodies

Beauty Swap Goodies

See... I told ya!  I haven't even had time to give everything a try, but I'm seriously looking forward to all the fun I'm going to have when I do!

This morning I made myself presentable to the public by using the Smashbox BB Cream, the Too Faced bronzer and mascara and the Buxom lip gloss (which it's name, YOW, cracks me up!) and I'm liking it all so far.  The lip gloss isn't sticky and stayed on through my breakfast smoothie, so that's a win!  I've never used a BB cream, heck I'm not really even sure what it IS... but I'm loving the coverage and it feels great on.  I'll have to see how the mascara holds up throughout the day, but I've already had a couple people comment on my Instagram photo about how much they love it, so I have high hopes!  I'm a pretty big fan of L'Oreal's Beauty Tubes, but maybe I'll be swayed?!?!

Movie Magic #blogtober14

Posting on a Sunday?!!?  Who the heck is this girl?

I'll let you in on a little secret... scheduled post!  Ha.  Given the scheduled time for this post, I pray to all that is holy I'm still snuggled up with Bella in bed!  We are only getting away with this snugglefest because Matt is out in a duck blind and will be there most of the day.  #sorrynotsorry

I can't imagine in a million years why there would ever be a movie about my life, but for the sake of today's #blogtober14 prompt I did think about who would play me in said movie.  I thought about it for a minute, came up blank and then resorted to using an online celebrity look alike generator!

And don't think I just tried it with one photo!  Upload. All. The. Pics!  Depending on the picture I uploaded I was matched with a variety of actresses (and actors, thanks a lot!) that I wouldn't mind playing me in a big budget blockbuster: Cate Blanchett.  Laura Linney.  Hillary Duff.

But I'll be vain and tell you I'd pick J. Love, hands down!

Now go play with the look alike generator, then come back and tell me who you got matched up with!!
